The skin is made up of two layers of tissues.
[1] Epidermis [2] Dermis.
Epidermis contains a fatty substance that makes the skin water proof.
Dermis contains blood vessels, nerves, muscles, oil glands, sweat glands and hair roots [follicles].
Burns results from dry heat, extreme cold, corrosive substances, frictions or radiation including the sun’s rays.
Scalds are caused by wet heat from liquids and vapours.
THERE IS GREATER THREAT TO LIFE IF BURNS & SCALDS ARE TOGATHER.
This is important to evaluate the severity of burns and plan accordingly.
[1] 1ST degree burn:- Redness and pain.
[2] 2ND degree burn [partial thickness]
Red or mottled appearance with associated swelling and blister formation, which is extremely painful.
[3] 3RD degree burn [full thickness]:-
Appear dark and leathery. Surface may be red and does not blanch on pressure.
First-Aid:
Pour room temperature water on the burnt area.
Don’t try to remove the clothing if it is stick to the skin.
Don’t put a bandage, simply cover the wound.
Don’t feed water or any liquid in an unconscious state.
Take care of airways first.
If needed start ABC AND CPR.
Chemical Burns:
Are always serious and needs urgent hospitalization.
First-Aid:
Flood the affected part with water and try to remove the clothing while flooding the injury.
Watch for airways and breathing. Try to note the name and brand of that chemical to tell doctor, it will help in quick, better and perfect treatment. |
